Main Line Cleaning in Reading, PA
The main sewer line is the pipe that carries everything from your house out to the street. When it clogs, the whole plumbing system backs up at once. We cable and jet the main line clear so everything flows again, and we camera it when the clogs keep coming back.
When the Main Line Stops, Everything Stops
Every drain in the house eventually feeds into one pipe, the main sewer line that runs from the building out to the street or the municipal connection. When a branch clogs, one fixture stops. When the main line clogs, all of them stop. Wastewater has nowhere to go, so it backs up into the lowest point in the house, usually a basement floor drain or the lowest tub. That is the moment most people realize the problem is not a single sink but the whole line.
We clear the main line the same way we clear any drain, with a cable machine to break the clog and hydro jetting to scour it clean, but at a larger scale. The access is usually the main cleanout, and once we reach the blockage we can reopen the line without digging. When clogs return, a camera inspection tells us whether roots, a belly, or a damaged section is the real cause.
Signs Your Main Line Is the Problem
- Several fixtures backing up at the same time
- Gurgling drains, especially when water runs elsewhere
- Water coming up in the basement floor drain
- A lowest tub or shower backing up
- Toilets bubbling or draining slowly
- A sewage smell in the basement or lowest level
What Clogs a Main Sewer Line
Tree roots are the most common cause on older laterals, entering through joints and cracks in clay and cast iron. Grease and sludge build up over years of use. Scale narrows older cast iron from the inside. A belly, a sag in the line where the ground settled, collects water and debris until the pipe clogs there repeatedly. And an obstruction like a collapsed section or a foreign object can stop the line cold.
Most of these can be cleared without excavation. The ones that cannot, a collapse or a badly broken pipe, show up on a camera inspection, which is how we know the difference before we recommend a repair.
Clearing the Main Line, Top to Bottom
- 1
We find the cleanout
We locate the main cleanout or access point that lets us reach the full length of the main line.
- 2
We cable the clog
A heavy-duty cable machine is fed to the blockage to break it up or pull it back, reopening the line.
- 3
We jet it clean
If the line has grease or sludge buildup, we hydro jet the walls clean to restore full diameter.
- 4
We camera to confirm
On repeat clogs we inspect the line to show you whether roots, a belly or a broken section is the underlying cause.
Homes
Most residential main line calls involve roots or a belly on an older lateral. We clear it and camera it to flag whether the pipe needs more.
Businesses
Commercial main lines carry higher volume and more grease. We have the equipment to clear larger lines and jet them back to full capacity.
When Clearing Is a Band-Aid
If the main line has clogged once, clearing fixes it. If it has clogged several times, clearing is buying time. A collapsed section, a bad belly, or a pipe full of open root entries will keep clogging until it is repaired. A camera inspection shows us the difference, and we will tell you honestly when clearing will hold and when it will not.
Frequently Combined With
Main Line Questions
How do I know the clog is in the main line and not a single drain?
If only one fixture is affected, the clog is in that branch. If several drains back up at once, or water comes up in the lowest drain in the house like a basement floor drain or the lowest tub, the clog is in the main line between the house and the street.
What causes a main sewer line to clog?
The usual causes are tree roots growing into joints or cracks, grease and sludge buildup, scale in older cast iron, a sag or belly in the line that collects debris, or an obstruction. A camera inspection shows which one it is.
Can you clear a main line without digging up the yard?
In most cases, yes. We cable or hydro jet the line through the cleanout to clear the blockage without excavation. Digging is only needed if the pipe is collapsed or broken, and we confirm that with a camera first.
Why does water come up in the basement when the main line is clogged?
A main line clog stops everything downstream, so wastewater has nowhere to go. It backs up and finds the lowest opening, which is usually a basement floor drain or the lowest fixture in the house.
Should I camera the main line after it's cleared?
Yes, especially if it has clogged more than once. A camera inspection shows whether roots, cracks, a belly or a collapsed section caused the clog, so you know if the line needs more than clearing.
